Playing In Bad Weather

Bad weather and poor playing conditions on the golf course can bring the best out of you, or the worst, depending upon your attitude! Most of us who have a great passion for golf absolutely love it when the conditions on the course change at the drop of a coin. That is what makes golf fun and challenging.

Think about it, if you make every shot with a perfect lie, absolutely no wind, and zero obstructions to play around, then what would be the challenge? Of course the game would be easier and you would probably score very well on each game you play, but there’s no zest when constantly playing in perfect conditions, no change, nothing to test our abilities at golf. And you certainly wouldn’t need any golf tips.

Golf Tips No 1 – The Joy Of Bad Weather

Overcoming the ever-changing challenges of golf is what it’s all about. What changes are out there that can make the game exciting? For starters, bad weather! Having a storm roll in at the last minute can cause all kinds of obstacles to change the game.

Golf is an outdoor sport, always has been, and always will be. It’s a beautiful thing, knocking a good solid round with your friends under the great blue sky, getting a suntan, and watching nature as you move from hole to hole. However, this perfect picture can change in an instant when a storm hits the area. Every shot you make will be affected by these weather conditions.

The good players, those that have a positive mental attitude and enjoy these challenges, will adapt to the changes in the environment and on the course. Other men and women who interpret stormy weather as annoying, and obviously have a bad attitude, will complain and more than likely quit their game out of frustration. Yet if they would only follow thses golf tips they might find the bad weather is immaterial to their enjoyment of the game.

Golf Tips No 2 – Learn To Take Advantage Of Poor Playing Conditions

Ironically, there are many professional golf players that prefer to play in bad weather, and which completely changes their shots from hole to hole. The reason they enjoy this is so that their competition will obviously not do as well as planned.

While you and I do not compete and are playing golf for enjoyment, professionals that are competing in major tournaments are out there to win. The competition is fierce and stormy weather will bring out the best in those players who can adapt.

When the weather makes a turn for the worst during these tournaments, those players that only fair well in decent conditions are weeded out. Then only the better, more experienced golf players are left to compete. These men and women are able to use the conditions to their advantage, such as the wind, precipitation, and extreme temperatures. Remember to check the weather forecast before you leave the house so that if bad weather is forecast you will be suitably equipped.

Why do most golfers ignore the “short game”?

And why do they attempt to hit shots that become airborne at great distances?

Maybe it’s ego, or just plain amusing. Striking a great shot faraway into the sky may have some attraction, but when it comes to the short game, you must employ different strategies in order to improve your score.

One such strategy is to continually strike the ball low. Not only is it effective, but keeping it safe with low ball shots tends to deliver a better final result when the scorecards are marked. Your goal ought to be to improve.

By playing the short game and keeping the ball grounded, you have the chance to remove your ego out of the game and make better decisions with your shots, as in the following examples:

The Short Game No 1 – When The Ball Is Close To The Green

When your ball is close to the green, it is challenging to decide how it will travel when you send it airborne. Estimating the ball’s destination is a great deal easier when striking it low enough to keep it grounded.

It only makes sense to play the short game and keep the ball low enough so that it rolls most of the distance as close to the hole as possible. When your ball is sitting hardly 30 to 40 yards distant from the hole, you will only ask for trouble if you choose to pop it up into the air.

The Short Game No 2 – During Windy Weather Conditions

When you are playing golf during spells of high pressure winds, your shots can turn from easy to calamitous in just one stroke. By hitting the ball high in the air, you give away your control and are more susceptible to the direction that the wind can take it.

When you avoid shooting low on a breezy day, the wind can send your ball moving to the left, to the right, or even carry it a greater distance than the intended destination. But playing the short game enables you to play a low, but firm shot to the ball, consequently the wind has a good deal less of a chance to interfere with the ball’s travel path.

The Short Game No 3 – When The Ball Has Landed In An Area Which Is Blocking A High Shot

Sometimes you will make a shot and the ball will finish up underneath a tree or some other immovable obstruction that precludes you from sending it airborne. This is a perfect opportunity to practise your short game by playing low ball shots in order to absent yourself from a awkward position.

Golf Tips To Help You Play Through The Rain

It takes a very dedicated golfer to enjoy playing a full 18 holes in the rain. I’ve got a friend who is so passionate about golf that he is on the course everyday, regardless if it is raining or snowing. So long as the course is open, he is out there!

While you wouldn’t catch me getting drenched in the storming rain on the golf course, I will admit that a person who appreciates these poor weather conditions will learn more about their swing and adaptation skills than any other golfer who only plays during perfect weather.

When playing golf in the rain, there are three things that make it very difficult to enjoy the game:

1. You are no longer comfortable due to being wet and soggy, which can have a negative impact on your focus and concentration levels.

2. You have less control over the club because your hands are wet, thus loosening up your grip.

3. The game also takes a lot longer to complete, due to the ball not traveling as far, slower plays through each hole, and of course, having to take more shots to finish each round.

Playing Golf In The Rain Has It’s Pleasures

The upside to playing golf in the rain is the fact that the ball stops very quickly on the green so instead of worrying about unwanted distance, the ball practically sticks when it lands, like throwing a dart at a dart board. Your putt shots will also roll a lot slower than normal, making it easier to control the ball.

Here are a few golf tips for the golfer who is on the course when it rains:

Golf Tips No 1

1. A wet grip can cause a good shot to go bad, so carry several small towels with you. Stuff them in your golf bag and use the towels to keep your grip as dry as possible during the game.

Golf Tips No 2

2. Always keep one or two umbrellas with you at all times. The extra umbrella can come in handy if one of your playing partners forgets to bring one.

Golf Tips No 3

3. Have two or three extra golf clubs with you as well. They will inevitably get wet and can be quite uncomfortable to swing with.

Golf Tips No 4

4. Your body and hands are not the only things that should be kept dry. Your golf bag needs to be free from moisture and rain with a plastic covering. Most new golf bags have a fairly decent cover that comes with them at the time of purchase, but if you do not have one, visit the nearest golf sporting store to see what is in stock.

Golf Tips No 5

5. If you plan on playing golf in the rain on a regular basis, invest into a high-quality, full bodied rain suit. You can also find these at most golf sporting stores. Your game in the rain will be much more enjoyable with a rain suit.

Golf Tips No 6

6. When it comes to your swing during rainy weather, ease back slowly and swing much smoother than normal, with less strength you would normally use. Consider this a safety tip because the wetness could cause your club to literally fly out of your hands and cause a bad accident.

As you can appreciate from these golf tips it is not necessary to be a “fair weather” golfer – just follow these golf tips and you’ll enjoy your game whatever the weather!

How to Play Golf on a Windy Day

Playing golf in windy weather, though extremely challenging, does offer enormous benefits for those players that like to be tested. Understanding how to hit the ball in response to poor weather conditions is the sign of a great golf player, one that appreciates not only a good score, but being challenged on the course as well.

Enjoying the change in weather on a windy day when playing off takes adaptation skills in order to continue on with your game and finish the course. Here are a few tips for playing golf when the wind is blowing hard:

Five Tips for Better Play on a Windy Day

1. Use a club that offers far less loft then you would normally need. The reason for this is to lower the height in which the ball would typically have to reach the intended destination. This minimizes the effects that a heavy wind will have on the ball. When the wind is coming in strong it has a natural tendency to carry the ball with it. Less height will give you more control over the shot.

2. For better control of your club when making a shot on a windy day, tighten up your grip.

3. Anytime you must hit the ball into the wind, keep your shot as low as you possibly can. You you must choose a club that has less loft on it. And expect the ball to travel far less than it normally would. You have to remember that when playing in windy conditions, you will always take more shots to get the ball in the hole, so it is better to play your game with caution.

4. Never fight the strength of the wind. Embrace the conditions and try to use it to your advantage. Aim your shots in the opposite direction that the wind is blowing into. This will help you learn basic skills of adaptation needed on the golf course.

5. To ensure that your shot is made with as much accuracy as you can possibly muster up when the wind is blowing fiercely, make each swing smooth and steady, only using half of your strength. On a windy day there is a tendency for the wind to carry the ball much higher and farther than it normally would travel, so to minimize mistakes, focus on accuracy instead of distance.

Like all sports, golf has its own terminology in reference to many aspects of the game. For example, when you make a shot from the tee box of a par-4 or par-5 hole, it is called the drive or tee shot in golf terms.

On a par-3, it is called just the tee shot. If your next move is to hit the ball onto the green and you are at a distance of at least 100 yards away, the shot you are about to take his called an “approach shot”. A pitch describes the same shot, but from a distance of only 40 to 90 yards. As you can see these golf terms are almost another language!

When a player hits the ball, there are several descriptions which reflect each of those shots within a few seconds after the ball is in the air. Below is a brief description of each type of shot a golf player can make and what it is called in golf terms:

Golf Terms and Basic Terminology

The Slice: The slice is often referred to the type of shot a beginner may make. Most new golfers tend to put a sidespin on the ball Instead of hitting square from the face of the club. Typically, this hit comes from the “outside-in”, which describes the way a club approaches the ball from the right side to its left. This causes the ball to spend the opposite way, hence the name slice. Of course, left-handed shooters would reverse that description.

The Fade: The fade is basically like a slice, but with a lesser curve shot. The fade is often intentional by more experienced players.

The Hook: Considered to be the opposite of the slice, a hook is when the ball is hit from the “inside-out” and causes a spin from right to left. Like the slice, this is not a desirable shot.

The Draw: The draw is a positive shot, one that is desirable. The ball floats in a gradual right to left spin, and is more stable and under control than the above mentioned shots.

The Fat: Nobody likes to have a shot described as “fat”. When this happens, you have basically hit more ground than you did the ball. The ball may pop up in the air, and fall short.

The Top: A top shot is when you hit the ball on its topside and it typically does not become airborne, instead it just glides down the path and becomes a “worm burner”, as they say.

The Chili Dip: A chili dip is typically done on purpose and describes a shot that is made “fat” in order to get the ball onto the green from a relatively short distance.

During the top of the swing, the right arm should be closed snug into your side (right-handed golfers). The left arm should be straight, but not entirely stiff. The hips should be turned at about 45°. The shoulders should be about 90°. Most of your weight should also be placed on the right foot.

You must always follow through once the ball has been hit and is moving towards the target. If you don’t follow through, you can risk injuries to the arms and torso, as well as lessening the speed of the ball.

The final nugget of advice we have for you is selecting the appropriate golf club whilst studying golf swing fundamentals. Each and every golf club will vary in different ways. These include how much loft a golf club generates to the ball, the lie angle, and golf club length. Your driver is the lengthiest club. It offers the smallest amount for loft besides the flattest swing plane. The shortest golf club you have got is the sand wedge, which furnishes the highest measure of loft and a very steep swing plane.

Neither club is advocated when just commencing to learn your golf swing. It’s not intelligent practice to use your longest clubs or your shortest clubs as the swing conditions they make are unique in conjunction with the golf club’s size and build.

Start With The 7-Iron

Though you may select any golf club you like, we would highly advocate the 7-iron for those players who are a little unsure on the fundamentals and are still rehearsing their golf swing. You’ll find that this club is in the middle in terms of length and action output. It’s also a great deal easier to control than the other clubs, particularly the driver.

Owing to the 7-iron’s average swing plane and the perfect amount of loft, it makes the perfect golf club to learn your swing with and make contact with the ball for basic shots.

Some novice golfers are not instructed about this and they practise with other clubs that don’t bring about the best results during this part of the learning curve. For instance, if you practise with a wedge, the ball will have a lot of backspin on it due to the high loft action output of the club. This makes poor golf shotsthat will result in hooks and/or slices. You will not be competent to nail any troubles in your swing whilst using such clubs for practice.

But by using the 7-iron, you’ll be able to distinguish whenever the ball is either slicing, hooking, or going in a straight direction. So you should use this club whilst you’re just learning how to swing. As it is easy to use, your self-confidence level in creating your shots will rise rapidly and you’ll be able to advance further at a speedier rate.

The contact you create with the golfball and the direction (and loft) that it goes in is decided by the trajectory path of your shot. Whenever you are aiming for a straight shot, then it is essential that the club head be moving directly inside the target line. Whenever you wish the ball to go left, then the route of the clubhead should be aiming left, and the other way around for the opposite direction.

Deciding about the above elements when creating your shot is actually just simple physics. Nevertheless, it is not that easy to learn how to correctly steer your club head in regard to where you want the ball to go. This can take a great many golf shots before it is mastered.

The downswing will finally release your power into making contact with the ball. The hands and forearms should rotate slightly counterclockwise (right-handed golfers). The club head then rotates toward the ball until it is perfectly perpendicular to your target line.

Visual Image Can Help

By thinking the right process in your mind, you can better learn to accomplish the release of the club head. Think of your right forearm rotating over the left forearm (right-handed golfers) as you create your swing. Once you strike the ball, the right hand and forearm should be bit by bit turning towards your left. The backside of your left hand should be facing the direction of the target line after impact. Finally, the backside of your right hand should be pointing skyward.

The Follow Through

Each swing leads to a “follow through”. This depicts what your golf club, and your body, appears like after making impact with the ball. Although the ball is now well on its way winging through the air, you still need to rotate your body and the club in a fluent and elegant manner.

Imagine if you abruptly arrested all movement as soon as the ball is struck. This would result in a reduction of club head speed, in addition to potentially hurting your wrists and hands. Additionally, your follow through could also help determine whether or not your golf swing requires to be fine-tuned and repositioned.

Once your swing is executed, your hips ought to be turned only enough so that your abdomen region is looking at the target. Almost all of your weight should be moved to the left foot and your right foot should be on its toes. Your back should be reasonably straight and the golf club will be draped around the back of your shoulders.

Final Tip: Once your body has ceased moving and your follow through is over, practise staying in that position for a couple of seconds after each shot. Not only can you determine the trajectory path of the ball, but if your body can stay motionless without canting over over, it’s a good augury that you had complete balance and coordination.

This is the moment of truth. Your backswing should have been disciplined and fluent. Now you’ll experience a switch in the pace and the downswing will be under total release and great power, yet elegant and comfortable at the same time.

Regrettably, this is where numerous novice and amateur golfers make their errors. Their backswing may have been started perfectly, only their transition toward establishing contact with the ball is subverted by a pathetic downswing.

Don’t pay a great deal of attention towards your arms and hands. They’ll be the last to turn and it should happen naturally.

This part is essential. By not repositioning your weight onto the left foot you’ll lose about half of the power and accuracy necessary to make a winning shot. At the start you might need to intentionally shift your weight, but after adequate practice your body should do this naturally.

As you’re doing this, endeavour to preserve the bend you have in your wrists as long as feasible. They should be the final part of your body to release before the ball is hit. If you are able to practice enough and are capable to snap your wrists at the final moment, you’ll undoubtedly have a lot of power and strength transmitted to the ball.

Good form is all-important. As the downswing gains momentum and speed, your entire body should just be following through mechanically, without hindrance. Once the clubhead draws close to the golf ball, you should feel as though you are cracking a whip, making full contact with the golf ball.
