Playing In Bad Weather

Bad weather and poor playing conditions on the golf course can bring the best out of you, or the worst, depending upon your attitude! Most of us who have a great passion for golf absolutely love it when the conditions on the course change at the drop of a coin. That is what makes golf fun and challenging.

Think about it, if you make every shot with a perfect lie, absolutely no wind, and zero obstructions to play around, then what would be the challenge? Of course the game would be easier and you would probably score very well on each game you play, but there’s no zest when constantly playing in perfect conditions, no change, nothing to test our abilities at golf. And you certainly wouldn’t need any golf tips.

Golf Tips No 1 – The Joy Of Bad Weather

Overcoming the ever-changing challenges of golf is what it’s all about. What changes are out there that can make the game exciting? For starters, bad weather! Having a storm roll in at the last minute can cause all kinds of obstacles to change the game.

Golf is an outdoor sport, always has been, and always will be. It’s a beautiful thing, knocking a good solid round with your friends under the great blue sky, getting a suntan, and watching nature as you move from hole to hole. However, this perfect picture can change in an instant when a storm hits the area. Every shot you make will be affected by these weather conditions.

The good players, those that have a positive mental attitude and enjoy these challenges, will adapt to the changes in the environment and on the course. Other men and women who interpret stormy weather as annoying, and obviously have a bad attitude, will complain and more than likely quit their game out of frustration. Yet if they would only follow thses golf tips they might find the bad weather is immaterial to their enjoyment of the game.

Golf Tips No 2 – Learn To Take Advantage Of Poor Playing Conditions

Ironically, there are many professional golf players that prefer to play in bad weather, and which completely changes their shots from hole to hole. The reason they enjoy this is so that their competition will obviously not do as well as planned.

While you and I do not compete and are playing golf for enjoyment, professionals that are competing in major tournaments are out there to win. The competition is fierce and stormy weather will bring out the best in those players who can adapt.

When the weather makes a turn for the worst during these tournaments, those players that only fair well in decent conditions are weeded out. Then only the better, more experienced golf players are left to compete. These men and women are able to use the conditions to their advantage, such as the wind, precipitation, and extreme temperatures. Remember to check the weather forecast before you leave the house so that if bad weather is forecast you will be suitably equipped.

Why do most golfers ignore the “short game”?

And why do they attempt to hit shots that become airborne at great distances?

Maybe it’s ego, or just plain amusing. Striking a great shot faraway into the sky may have some attraction, but when it comes to the short game, you must employ different strategies in order to improve your score.

One such strategy is to continually strike the ball low. Not only is it effective, but keeping it safe with low ball shots tends to deliver a better final result when the scorecards are marked. Your goal ought to be to improve.

By playing the short game and keeping the ball grounded, you have the chance to remove your ego out of the game and make better decisions with your shots, as in the following examples:

The Short Game No 1 – When The Ball Is Close To The Green

When your ball is close to the green, it is challenging to decide how it will travel when you send it airborne. Estimating the ball’s destination is a great deal easier when striking it low enough to keep it grounded.

It only makes sense to play the short game and keep the ball low enough so that it rolls most of the distance as close to the hole as possible. When your ball is sitting hardly 30 to 40 yards distant from the hole, you will only ask for trouble if you choose to pop it up into the air.

The Short Game No 2 – During Windy Weather Conditions

When you are playing golf during spells of high pressure winds, your shots can turn from easy to calamitous in just one stroke. By hitting the ball high in the air, you give away your control and are more susceptible to the direction that the wind can take it.

When you avoid shooting low on a breezy day, the wind can send your ball moving to the left, to the right, or even carry it a greater distance than the intended destination. But playing the short game enables you to play a low, but firm shot to the ball, consequently the wind has a good deal less of a chance to interfere with the ball’s travel path.

The Short Game No 3 – When The Ball Has Landed In An Area Which Is Blocking A High Shot

Sometimes you will make a shot and the ball will finish up underneath a tree or some other immovable obstruction that precludes you from sending it airborne. This is a perfect opportunity to practise your short game by playing low ball shots in order to absent yourself from a awkward position.

Golf Tips To Help You Play Through The Rain

It takes a very dedicated golfer to enjoy playing a full 18 holes in the rain. I’ve got a friend who is so passionate about golf that he is on the course everyday, regardless if it is raining or snowing. So long as the course is open, he is out there!

While you wouldn’t catch me getting drenched in the storming rain on the golf course, I will admit that a person who appreciates these poor weather conditions will learn more about their swing and adaptation skills than any other golfer who only plays during perfect weather.

When playing golf in the rain, there are three things that make it very difficult to enjoy the game:

1. You are no longer comfortable due to being wet and soggy, which can have a negative impact on your focus and concentration levels.

2. You have less control over the club because your hands are wet, thus loosening up your grip.

3. The game also takes a lot longer to complete, due to the ball not traveling as far, slower plays through each hole, and of course, having to take more shots to finish each round.

Playing Golf In The Rain Has It’s Pleasures

The upside to playing golf in the rain is the fact that the ball stops very quickly on the green so instead of worrying about unwanted distance, the ball practically sticks when it lands, like throwing a dart at a dart board. Your putt shots will also roll a lot slower than normal, making it easier to control the ball.

Here are a few golf tips for the golfer who is on the course when it rains:

Golf Tips No 1

1. A wet grip can cause a good shot to go bad, so carry several small towels with you. Stuff them in your golf bag and use the towels to keep your grip as dry as possible during the game.

Golf Tips No 2

2. Always keep one or two umbrellas with you at all times. The extra umbrella can come in handy if one of your playing partners forgets to bring one.

Golf Tips No 3

3. Have two or three extra golf clubs with you as well. They will inevitably get wet and can be quite uncomfortable to swing with.

Golf Tips No 4

4. Your body and hands are not the only things that should be kept dry. Your golf bag needs to be free from moisture and rain with a plastic covering. Most new golf bags have a fairly decent cover that comes with them at the time of purchase, but if you do not have one, visit the nearest golf sporting store to see what is in stock.

Golf Tips No 5

5. If you plan on playing golf in the rain on a regular basis, invest into a high-quality, full bodied rain suit. You can also find these at most golf sporting stores. Your game in the rain will be much more enjoyable with a rain suit.

Golf Tips No 6

6. When it comes to your swing during rainy weather, ease back slowly and swing much smoother than normal, with less strength you would normally use. Consider this a safety tip because the wetness could cause your club to literally fly out of your hands and cause a bad accident.

As you can appreciate from these golf tips it is not necessary to be a “fair weather” golfer – just follow these golf tips and you’ll enjoy your game whatever the weather!

How to Play Golf on a Windy Day

Playing golf in windy weather, though extremely challenging, does offer enormous benefits for those players that like to be tested. Understanding how to hit the ball in response to poor weather conditions is the sign of a great golf player, one that appreciates not only a good score, but being challenged on the course as well.

Enjoying the change in weather on a windy day when playing off takes adaptation skills in order to continue on with your game and finish the course. Here are a few tips for playing golf when the wind is blowing hard:

Five Tips for Better Play on a Windy Day

1. Use a club that offers far less loft then you would normally need. The reason for this is to lower the height in which the ball would typically have to reach the intended destination. This minimizes the effects that a heavy wind will have on the ball. When the wind is coming in strong it has a natural tendency to carry the ball with it. Less height will give you more control over the shot.

2. For better control of your club when making a shot on a windy day, tighten up your grip.

3. Anytime you must hit the ball into the wind, keep your shot as low as you possibly can. You you must choose a club that has less loft on it. And expect the ball to travel far less than it normally would. You have to remember that when playing in windy conditions, you will always take more shots to get the ball in the hole, so it is better to play your game with caution.

4. Never fight the strength of the wind. Embrace the conditions and try to use it to your advantage. Aim your shots in the opposite direction that the wind is blowing into. This will help you learn basic skills of adaptation needed on the golf course.

5. To ensure that your shot is made with as much accuracy as you can possibly muster up when the wind is blowing fiercely, make each swing smooth and steady, only using half of your strength. On a windy day there is a tendency for the wind to carry the ball much higher and farther than it normally would travel, so to minimize mistakes, focus on accuracy instead of distance.
